The 2025 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) took place from Monday, 14 July to Wednesday, 23 July 2025, under the leadership of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). As the UN’s central platform for reviewing and advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the HLPF serves as a crucial forum for governments, civil society, academia, and private sector actors to assess progress, share knowledge, and strengthen global partnerships in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A dedicated ministerial segment was held during the final three days, from 21 to 23 July 2025, as part of ECOSOC’s high-level sessions. This segment provided an opportunity for political leaders to engage in in-depth discussions, evaluate national and global progress on the SDGs, and make actionable commitments for the years ahead.

Theme of HLPF 2025

The main theme of the 2025 forum was:

“Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science- and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring no one is left behind.”

This theme emphasized the importance of using science, research, and evidence-based approaches to create fair, long-lasting solutions for sustainable development. The forum highlighted the necessity of leaving no one behind, ensuring that all countries, communities, and vulnerable populations benefit from sustainable growth and progress toward the SDGs.

Focused Sustainable Development Goals

The 2025 HLPF concentrated on five key Sustainable Development Goals to review global and national progress:

SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being

Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages. The forum examined global health systems, access to healthcare, disease prevention, and strategies to improve health outcomes.

SDG 5 – Gender Equality

Achieving equality for women and girls, empowering them socially, economically, and politically. Discussions focused on eliminating discrimination, promoting equal opportunities, and addressing barriers to education and leadership roles.

SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth

SDG 14 – Life Below Water

Conserving and sustainably using oceans, seas, and marine resources. The forum addressed marine biodiversity protection, ocean pollution, and sustainable fisheries management.

SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals

Strengthening global partnerships to implement the SDGs effectively. Discussions included international cooperation, financing for development, and collaborative action across sectors.

Many participating countries presented Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs), highlighting their progress, challenges, and innovative approaches to achieving the SDGs in their respective nations. These activities fostered cross-sector collaboration and emphasized practical solutions for advancing sustainable development at both national and global levels.
