Good Jobs and Economic Growth

Building a Fair and Sustainable Future

Goal 8 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals focuses on promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, creating productive employment, and ensuring decent work for all. It emphasises that growth should not only benefit economies but also improve the lives of people by providing safe and good jobs.

Why Goal 8 Matters

Jobs give people the money they need to take care of themselves and their families. When more people have work, the economy becomes stronger, and the whole country improves. But this growth must be fair and protect the rights of workers.

The Aim of Goal 8

By 2030, Goal 8 aims to achieve progress through 12 key targets that guide countries and communities toward stronger economies and better work opportunities:

Steady Economic Growth

Support economies to grow in a way that benefits all people equally.

Decent and Productive Work

Ensure that jobs are safe, fair, and provide proper income.

Support for Small Businesses and Innovation

Encourage entrepreneurship and new ideas to create more job opportunities.

Higher Labour Productivity

Improve skills, technology, and efficiency so that work becomes more effective and competitive.

End Exploitation

Eliminate child labour, forced labour, and unsafe or unfair working conditions.

Protect Workers’ Rights

Guarantee safe workplaces and uphold workers’ rights worldwide.

Youth Employment

Tackle high youth unemployment by offering training and job opportunities.

Financial Inclusion

Make banking, loans, and financial tools accessible to everyone to support businesses and individuals.

Sustainable Tourism

Promote tourism that creates jobs and respects local culture and the environment.

Resilient Economies

Build economies that are diverse, adaptable, and able to withstand global challenges.

Current Progress and Activities

Ongoing Challenges

Despite progress, many workers still face unsafe conditions, low wages, and job insecurity. Youth unemployment remains high, and in many places, economic growth benefits only a small portion of society. Another challenge is ensuring that growth is environmentally friendly and does not harm future generations.

How We Can Make a Difference

Current Progress and Activities

Goal 8 is about more than just jobs—it’s about creating opportunities that are safe, fair, and sustainable for everyone. By building economies that prioritise people and the environment, we can shape a future where no one is left behind. At Sustainable Development Goals, we believe that decent work and fair economic growth are cornerstones of human dignity. Join us in supporting initiatives that create better jobs, empower workers, and grow economies responsibly.

Together, we can make a world where all people get fair work and a better life.
