Education is a fundamental pillar of sustainable development, ensuring that individuals acquire the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes necessary to build a better future. Over the years, international frameworks have emphasized the importance of education for all, with a focus on inclusivity, equity, and lifelong learning opportunities. The Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI), adopted at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (2002), reaffirmed global commitments to achieving universal primary education and eliminating gender disparities in education, reflecting the importance of education in social and economic progress.

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has emerged as a key concept in aligning learning with sustainable development goals. ESD integrates principles of sustainability into both formal and non-formal education, encouraging learners to adopt responsible behaviors and understand the interconnections between social, economic, and environmental systems. Initiatives such as the Muscat Agreement (2014) and the development of Sustainable Development Goal 4 highlight the global recognition of ESD as an essential enabler for a sustainable future, aiming to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all while promoting lifelong learning opportunities.

The United Nations has consistently emphasized the role of education in shaping sustainable societies. Agenda 21, developed during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (1992), underlined the importance of integrating sustainable development into education at all levels. Similarly, the Future We Want outcome document from the Rio+20 Conference (2012) reinforced the need to promote sustainable development values through learning, emphasizing that education is a strategic tool for achieving broader development goals.

UNESCO has played a important role in advancing education for sustainable development. The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005–2014) highlighted the critical role of education in fostering values and attitudes that support sustainable living and environmental stewardship. The final report, Shaping the Future We Want, presented at the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (2014), emphasized how education can empower individuals and communities to make informed decisions and take responsible actions toward sustainability.

Higher education institutions also contribute significantly to promoting sustainability through initiatives such as the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI), established in preparation for Rio+20. HESI encourages universities worldwide to integrate sustainability into their curricula, conduct research on sustainable development, green their campuses, and engage with local communities. With nearly 300 member universities, HESI represents a vital bridge between policy-making, academia, and practical sustainability actions, enabling higher education to play an active role in global development efforts.

In conclusion, education remains a cornerstone for achieving sustainable development. By providing inclusive, equitable, and quality learning opportunities, education equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to address pressing global challenges, from climate change and resource management to social equity and economic growth. Integrating sustainability into education, supporting lifelong learning, and fostering global partnerships ensures that future generations are prepared to create resilient, informed, and sustainable societies.
